Solid vs. Liquid

When it comes to making choices, I tend to lean more toward the solid, concrete alternatives and avoid the liquid, unstable ones.  When I think of solid I see mountains, the best kind of ice cream, home, and friends.  Liquid means water, always changing, and horrible ice cream.  I thought when I came to DC that I was leaving a solid life and an idea that would never change.  I was freaked, yet I was afraid of something different.

Here I am, sitting in my apartment in a liquid situation.  Where even though I have a daily routine, things are always changing.  I couldn't be happier.  Why is it that some many of us are afraid of going along with the ebb and flow of life?  What is the beauty of having something so solid, that it ends up being boring and repetitive, almost like a cage?   What do you think, do you want a solid or liquid life?  If I could have perfection, there would be a bridge.  Connecting a solid foundation to the floating island.  I would have both.

Hollywood Connection

You would assume that since I am in D.C. if I ever saw anyone famous, he or she would be a prominent politician.  Well, we all know what ass-u-m-ing does.  On my first day of work my boss, Mary Beth, and I were walking to lunch.  We ran into a co-worker who said, "Hey, come and meet my newest team member.  His name is Andrew, you might recognize him, he is the BACHELOR!!!!!"  If anyone watches that show, he is the guy from the "An Officer and a Gentlman" season.  We were introduced, he shook my hand (what a freakin' grip), his eyes burowed into my soul, and he smiled a ton.  The peopel with me were just fine, having a normal conversation.  Then I was there, feeling like a wet noodle and if he would have said any more than he did, I would have fallen apart.  I am just ridiculous.  I would say something every once in a while, but I was mostly mum.  I wish I could have gotten a picture with him, but that will be the next time.

Shoes

"Funny that a pair of really nice shoes make us feel good  in our heads - at the extreme opposite end of our bodies" -- Levende Waters

Shoes are one of my essential needs, especially nice ones.  They are with you all day, get you from place to place, protect you, and are constantly supporting you.  So, of course I brought a ton to D.C.; I need all the support I can get.  I carried them with me because I wasn't going to pay $50.  All I can say is I hated my shoes that day; my arms were jello.  It didn't help that my flight got canceled and I had to sit in the Atlanta airport for 8 extra hours.  The only good thing  about my delay was the thinking I was able to do.  I am a people watcher and I pay attention to the small things about a person, shoes.  Where have their shoes been, what does that person do, how many steps have they taken, whose shoes have these people tried to follow? This got me thinking: where have I been, who am I , where am I going, who are the people I follow, how am I going to last in D.C.?  BAD thing to contemplate because I definately thought about my family and friends.  Not the smartest thing to do when you are going to be away for four months.  My patton leathers, birkenstocks, and Jeffrey Campbells will get me from place to place, but keeping in contact with friends and my family will be my unfailing support and protection through the next four months of steps in D.C.
